Treasure Island

Jim Hawkins helps his mother run the Admiral Benbow inn on the English coast, until an old sea captain named Billy Bones takes a room and brings trouble with him. After a visit from sinister former shipmates, Jim finds himself holding a map that leads to the buried treasure of the notorious pirate Captain Flint. With Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey, he sets sail on the Hispaniola under the stern Captain Smollett, with a crew that includes a cheerful, one-legged sea cook named Long John Silver.

Told mostly by Jim, the novel is a classic coming-of-age adventure full of suspense, danger and quick changes of fortune. Stevenson writes in clean, vigorous prose, and his portrait of Silver, charming, clever and impossible to pin down, is one of the great characters in fiction. Beneath the excitement the book raises questions about loyalty, greed and how a boy learns to judge the adults around him.

Stevenson began the story in 1881 after drawing an imaginary island map with his young stepson. It was serialised in the magazine Young Folks under the pen name Captain George North, then published as a book in 1883. Much of our popular image of pirates, from treasure maps marked with an X to parrots on shoulders, owes a great deal to it, and it has been adapted countless times for screen, stage and radio.
