Résumé du livre

The Great Gatsby is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young Midwesterner who moves to Long Island in the summer of 1922 to work in the bond business in New York. His neighbour in West Egg is Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire whose lavish parties draw crowds of strangers. Across the bay in fashionable East Egg live Nick's cousin Daisy and her wealthy, overbearing husband Tom Buchanan. As Nick is drawn into Gatsby's world, he discovers that the parties, the mansion and the fortune all serve a single, carefully hidden purpose rooted in Gatsby's past.

The novel explores the American Dream and its corruption, the gulf between old money and new, and the impossibility of recapturing the past. Fitzgerald's prose is compact and lyrical, full of memorable images such as the green light at the end of Daisy's dock and the brooding billboard eyes over a desolate valley of ashes. Short enough to read in an afternoon, it rewards rereading.

Published by Scribner's in April 1925, the book received mixed reviews and modest attention during Fitzgerald's lifetime, and he died believing himself largely forgotten. Its reputation grew dramatically after the Second World War, and it became a fixture of school reading in the United States. It has been adapted for film, stage, opera and graphic novels, and entered the American public domain in 2021.

The Great Gatsby is a classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald, first published in 1925. On BookClassics you can read it free online in English and French. A free audio excerpt is also available. You may also like The Beautiful and Damned, This Side of Paradise and A Christmas Carol.
