The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

This collection gathers twelve short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective of 221B Baker Street, narrated by his friend and companion Dr John Watson. Clients arrive with puzzles large and small: a king fearing blackmail by the singer Irene Adler in "A Scandal in Bohemia", a pawnbroker hired for a strangely pointless job in "The Red-Headed League", a young woman afraid for her life in "The Speckled Band", and a missing husband in "The Man with the Twisted Lip". Each case begins with an odd detail and ends with Holmes explaining what everyone else overlooked.

The stories are short, brisk and built for pleasure. Doyle's great invention was a hero who solves crimes by close observation and logical reasoning, and a narrator who lets the reader share his amazement. The partnership between the cool, eccentric Holmes and the warm, practical Watson gives the tales their charm, while the gaslit London setting, with its fogs, cabs and lodging houses, remains vivid. They are an ideal introduction to detective fiction and still a model of how to plant clues fairly.

The stories first appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1891 and 1892, illustrated by Sidney Paget, whose drawings fixed the detective's image in the public mind. Their success turned Holmes into a sensation and the collection was published as a book in 1892. Holmes has since become one of the most frequently adapted characters in fiction, on stage, radio, film and television, and has inspired countless imitators and pastiches.
