Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre tells its story in her own voice, starting with a lonely childhood at Gateshead, where she is an orphan resented by her aunt, Mrs Reed. Sent away to Lowood, a harsh charity school, she finds hardship, illness and a precious friendship before growing into a capable young teacher. Wanting more of the world, she takes a post as governess at Thornfield Hall. There she meets the house's moody, sharp-tongued master, Edward Rochester, and an unlikely bond grows between them. Yet Thornfield is a house of strange noises and unexplained events, and its secret will put Jane's love and her principles to the hardest test.

The novel blends a coming-of-age story with romance and Gothic mystery. Its lasting power lies in Jane herself: plain, poor and outwardly quiet, yet insisting on her equal worth and her right to feel, think and choose for herself. Questions of conscience, independence, religion and the place of women run through the book, told in a direct first person that still feels modern.

Charlotte Brontë published Jane Eyre in 1847 under the pen name Currer Bell, and it was an immediate success, though some reviewers found its heroine improperly rebellious. It has never been out of print. Jean Rhys's 1966 novel Wide Sargasso Sea reimagined part of its story, and it has been adapted many times for screen, stage and radio.
