Résumé du livre

Dracula opens with Jonathan Harker, a young English solicitor, travelling to Transylvania to help a mysterious nobleman, Count Dracula, complete the purchase of a house near London. What begins as a business trip turns into an unsettling stay in a remote castle where Harker slowly realises he is more prisoner than guest. The danger then moves to England, touching his fiancée Mina Murray and her friend Lucy Westenra, and drawing in a small group of allies led by the Dutch professor Abraham Van Helsing, who understands the nature of the threat they face.

Stoker tells the story entirely through documents: diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings, a ship's log and phonograph records. This patchwork gives the novel a gripping sense of immediacy, as each character knows only part of the truth. Beneath the Gothic thrills lie anxieties about modern technology, sexuality, foreign influence and the fragility of reason.

Dracula was published in London in 1897. Stoker, an Irish writer who also worked as manager of the Lyceum Theatre, did not invent the vampire, but his Count became the definitive version of the figure. The novel has shaped horror fiction ever since and has been adapted countless times for the stage, film, television, radio and comics, making its villain one of the most recognisable characters in popular culture.

Dracula is a classic by Bram Stoker, first published in 1897. On BookClassics you can read it free online in English. A free audio excerpt is also available. You may also like Dracula's Guest, A Christmas Carol and A Journal of the Plague Year.
