Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

On a drowsy summer afternoon, young Alice sees a White Rabbit hurry past, checking his pocket watch, and follows him down a rabbit hole. She lands in Wonderland, a place where drinking from a bottle or nibbling a cake makes her shrink or grow, and where nothing behaves as lessons and manners have taught her to expect. She meets the grinning Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar on his mushroom, the Mad Hatter and March Hare at their endless tea party, and finally the furious Queen of Hearts and her chaotic court.

The book delights in nonsense, puns, parodies of Victorian school poems and games of logic that collapse into absurdity. Beneath the fun lies a sharp look at the arbitrary rules of the adult world and at a child's struggle to keep her sense of self as everything around her keeps changing. Its playful language and dreamlike structure appeal to children, while adults enjoy its wit and its sly philosophical puzzles.

Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an Oxford mathematician. The story grew out of tales he told to Alice Liddell and her sisters on a boating trip in 1862, and was published in 1865 with illustrations by John Tenniel. A sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, followed in 1871. Wonderland has been endlessly adapted in animation, live-action film, theatre and art, and its characters have entered everyday language.
